We started with the question: What do students need to do to learn Maths? The unsurprising answer is they need to
- Learn the facts, and
- Learn how to work the problems.
Videos and PDFs are not effective for either of these. They are passive learning tools. They work but they are inefficient and not really very effective. What tools are effective and efficient?
- Flashcards for learning the facts, and
- Interactive Worked Examples for learning how to work the problems.
These are both active learning approaches. They are the two major learning tools on this site.

There are two types of worked examples on the site. Illustrative Examples and Guided Examples.
Illustrative Examples
Illustrative examples are included in the lesson texts to illustrate the ideas in the lesson. Working through illustrative examples as you read through the lesson is an excellent way of fixing the ideas of the lesson in your mind.
Guided Examples
AC Maths Guided Example technology has been developed to mimic the interaction between student and tutor. They provide an interactive environment to help students remember the steps involved when solving problems.

There is another benefit of Guided Examples. Using worked solutions, it is natural to sneak a peek at the next line (we all do it). But this only increases your dependence on worked solutions. On the other hand, working a problem without a worked solution can be very frustrating, especially if you make a mistake in the first step. Guided Examples are a compromise between completely visible worked solutions and none at all.
